RECORD BEEF IMPORTS.
For the fiscal year 2007-2008, Indonesia imported 547,189 head of cattle from Australia.
This accounts for 71% of all cattle exported from Australia. The number for the full calendar year of 2008, was 735,000 head.
The new feedlots in Indonesia and the emerging economy, have made the worlds largest Moslem population, big players in the beef industry.
This is only part of the story, as Indonesia is now a large importer of chilled and frozen beef and offal’s taking 38,000 tons in 2008.
Feedlots in the country, now run 170,000 head of cattle at one time, which has developed a big domestic market for beef. Gross domestic product grew by 6.3 % last year.
Brazil now has approval, to service this lucrative market, which has been closed to them over foot-and-mouth restrictions
