Indonesia bans pork imports to prevent swine flu outbreak
Jakarta: An Indonesian government official says the country has banned pork imports after an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico is said to have killed more than 100 people.
People’s Welfare Minister Aburizal Bakrie says Monday the measure will remain "until the situation returns to normal."
Indonesian and other Asian nations have precautions including thermal screening at airports after human infections were reported across North America.
No figures are available about Indonesia’s pork market, but most of the country’s 235 million residents are Muslims and do not eat the meat.
An Agriculture Ministry official says there are no imports of live pigs posing an increased infection risk.
