Japan-Banks back McDonalds for half a billion dollars.
Japan’s three top banking groups are lead-managing a Y40 billion ($425 million) syndicated loan to global burger giant McDonald’s, according to media reports.
Mizuho Corporate Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. and Bank of Tokyo- Mitsubishi UFJ have organized the yen-denominated loan, with regional lenders among the nine other participants, according to Nikkei. The 62-month loan was initiated at the end of last month. Interest rates and other terms were not disclosed.
The Oak Brook, Ill.-based fast food chain is the latest global company to seek funding in Japan as U.S. and European banks have become cautious about lending. In the first half of last year, Japanese banks oversaw large syndicated loans to such major foreign companies as IBM and Sweden’s AB Volvo.
McDonald’s has been one of the winners in the foodservice sector as consumers have traded down to fast food from casual dining. On Feb. 9 the company reported January global comparable sales increased 7.1 percent from a year ago.
McDonald’s spokeswoman Heidi Barker told the Associated Press the loan is for "general corporate purposes."
