Legal action likely over FMD compensation
THE foot-and-mouth crisis has cost the livestock industry tens of millions of pounds, yet the Government has failed to offer adequate compensation to the worst hit farmers, according to NFU president Peter Kendall.
Compensation claims now look likely to be dragged through the law courts. Mr Kendall had 'frank' discussions with the Government this week over an improved compensation package for English livestock farmers. However, Defra remained steadfast behind the £12.5 million offer deemed 'wholly unsatisfactory' by Mr Kendall.
"Short term problems – like additional feed costs – are getting much more proactive responses in Scotland and Wales," said Mr Kendall. "All livestock farmers, but particularly those in the sheep sector, urgently need plausible schemes to help rebuild confidence."
