Longwell Green claims title as sprout capital of Britain
621675 Sprouts Sold In One Week - Equivalent To 85 For Every Man Woman And Child!
Longwell Green, a small suburb in Bristol has claimed the title of Britain's sprout eating capital by munching through more than six hundred thousand in one week. Having scoffed that many sprouts perhaps the town should be renamed "Pongwell" Green after the reputed side effects of eating the festive veg!
Earlier in the week rival supermarket Safeway claimed Clacton-on-Sea was the sprout capital of Britain, but residents in the seaside resort only get through 57,000 a week, equivalent to only one per head of population. By comparison Longwell Green shoppers chomp through more than six hundred thousand, equivalent to 85 for every man woman and child in the area!
Local people in Longwell Green have now mounted a campaign to claim the title back from Clacton-on-Sea. Mike Jarrett, ASDA general store manager said: "We eat 85 times more than people in Clacton-on-Sea and we deserve to win the title. Brussels are a way of life in Longwell Green - I wouldn't have a meal without them."
Second place fell to Norwich, last year's winner, and third place went to Leicester. No Scottish or Welsh stores figured in the top 10.
