Mexico-Changes to US meat import laws.

MAJOR CHANGES TO MEAT PACKAGING.

The government of Mexico has been introducing new packaging regulations for meat over the past few months that has caused serious problems with United States meat exporters.

The situation in recent years is that meat has been loaded on one ton pallets in re-enforced cardboard and loaded on to trucks.

This is unlike meat exports to the rest of the world that is shipped in 25 kilo cartons, identified and labeled with the establishment number.

Mexico are now demanding similar packaging while the US plants are complaining about the additional work and costs.

The US meat companies are up in arms over the new rules, with lobby organizations trying to twist the Mexican arms.

Mexico is the largest export market for US beef and pork, one would assume that new legislation will be passed at some point.
