New concentrated single dose injectable treatment for e.coli mastitis

Dairy farmers now have a powerful, more convenient treatment for mastitis caused by environmental E. coli bacteria.

Advocin 180 from Pfizer Animal Health is a potent injectable anti-bacterial that can treat E. coli mastitis with just a single concentrated low-volume dose. The new treatment works by achieving very high levels of active drug soon after being injected, enabling a shorter treatment period.

Unlike most other mastitis treatments, which rely on multiple doses to kill, or inhibit the growth of, bacteria over a period of time, Advocin180 has been formulated as a concentration dependent treatment and works quickly to kill E. coli in a single dose. The result is a quick clinical cure that helps infected cows back into production as soon as possible.

E. coli is now recognised as one of the major causes of mastitis in UK dairy herds. Recent years have seen an increase in the importance of environmental bacteria, such as E. coli, as a cause of production losses due to mastitis during lactation. Many such cases are a result of infections picked up during the late dry period1, and thus may not be prevented by conventional antibiotic dry cow therapy.

Producers are advised to contact their Vet for more information on this newly licensed treatment.
