New Information on Effective T1 Protection
As T1 timing approaches, a value-for-money broad-spectrum foliar protectant which not only manages resistance but also feeds the crop is what is really required. Used in mix with a suitable triazole, Quell Flo offers superior control of a wide range of diseases plus crop nutritional benefits at this timing.
"T1 sprays are applied to control diseases already present and to prevent any further disease developing in the subsequent four week period. They normally go on when winter wheat is at GS 32, a critical time as it corresponds with the emergence of leaf 3. T1 treatments are usually based around a triazole plus a multi-site protectant fungicide. Quell Flo which contains the world's number one multi-site ingredient, mancozeb, in an easy to use liquid formulation designed for wheat growers, gave superior control of mildew, yellow rust and brown rust at T1 at several trials sites throughout the country last year and equalled the performance of chlorothalonil on Septoria tritici," claims Dr. Stormonth, Technical Manager of Interfarm UK Ltd.
"In the 2007 trials both Quell Flo and chlorothalonil, each on their own, gave equivalent control of Septoria tritici 18 days after treatment, a fact not widely appreciated. But when it came to brown rust, Quell Flo was four times more effective than chlorothalonil; and for yellow rust it was almost twice as good. Quell Flo also gave superior control of mildew, being more than twice as effective. These results, from a countrywide trials series, clearly demonstrate that Quell Flo is a significant contender when it comes to mixing with a triazole at T1 timing. Another important fact is that it does not interfere with the uptake and action of other fungicides used in the tank-mix at the same time," explains Dr. Stormonth.
David points out that Quell Flo also delivers manganese and zinc that helps feed the crop, particularly important in wheat on light soils more likely to suffer from manganese deficiency. "A 1.5 l/ha dose of Quell Flo delivers 683 gms of mancozeb per hectare, 140 gms/ha of nutritional manganese and 13 gms/ha of zinc which makes the crop greener, leading to improved photosynthesis."
Including Quell in a wheat fungicide programme introduces an important anti-resistance strategy. "Mancozeb is the world's best selling multi-site fungicide with no resistance concerns and is rated in the HGCA wheat disease management guide as suitable for resistance management. With resistance and performance drift of triazoles and strobilurins being widespread, the multi-site activity of mancozeb ensures good disease protection and adds to its tank-mix partner's effectiveness. Quell Flo is formulated as a flowable for easy handling by cereal farmers and can be tank mixed with a wide range of other treatments such as growth regulators, triazoles, strobilurins or spring herbicides."

Quell Flo contains 455g/L mancozeb formulated as a suspension concentrate and packed in a 10 litre container. It is approved for use in wheat, oilseed rape and potatoes. In cereals it is recommended at a dose rate of 1.5 l/ha up to 3.3 l/ha. The maximum total crop dose is 9.9 l/ha. It has a Harvest Interval of up to GS 71 (grain watery ripe) and no LERAP.
