New more powerful engine from SAM
Sands Agricultural Machinery Limited are now fitting water-cooled engines to their range of self propelled sprayers. The new Deutz BF6M 2012 range replaces the existing air-cooled Deutz engines that have been used since SAM first built hydro-static sprayers nearly 30 years ago.
The new range of Deutz engines conform to the next Tier 3 emissions directive that comes into force in January 2006. SAM took the decision to start fitting the new engine earlier than required because they say there are significant benefits to the user other than that of reducing emissions.
Both power and torque have increased – on the 3000 litre machine up from 150hp to 177hp and on the 4000 litre model up from 175hp to 188hp. Torque across the range has risen by approximately 10%. Engines are still rated at 2500 rpm as per the previous air-cooled models.
Being water-cooled the new engine is also quieter by around 3dba. A significant amount given that a 10dba lowering effectively reduces noise at the operator's ear by 50%. The operator also benefits from more efficient air conditioning as the engine turns the compressor 40% faster, according to SAM.
An automatic pre-heater and post heater (not available on the air-cooled engines) improves starting in very cold conditions and significantly reduces 'smoking' on initial start up.
The water-cooled engines have a direct drive compressor to provide the air required for SAM's renowned pneumatic controls, thereby eliminating the need for belt drive to a remote compressor. General servicing of the engine is further simplified with easier access to filters and the hydraulic oil radiator is now mounted on a simple pivot to allow access to the injectors and pump.
New engine guards have been introduced which are lower then on previous models giving enhanced operator visibility to the rear and sides of the sprayer. All engine guards can be opened in seconds by simple push buttons to further ease access.
Further significant developments to the SLc range will be seen at this year's Cereals Event in Cambridgeshire say SAM.
