One in four farming families in the UK are not speaking to a member of their family because they have fallen out over succession issues, new evidence suggests.

The shocking statistic comes as the National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs (NFYFC), with support from Defra and AHDB, launches a new video looking at the importance of succession planning.

Communication and planning are vital for making the succession process easier, according to the organisations.

Working with NFYFC, succession expert Sian Bushell has shared her advice on how to manage the succession process to help young people have the confidence to start the conversation.

The release of the video follows news of research highlighting that less than 40% of farming families have an effective succession plan in place.

Despite revealing a low number of farms that have succession plans in place, most of those surveyed by NFU Mutual agreed that it was a vital way to safeguard the future of a family farm.

This raises concerns that more than half of family farms could face an uncertain future.
