NEW ZEALAND-Tandem discs.

speed and economics were the reasons Kay and Jim Shallue, from Mangaiti-Te Aroha, decided to purchase a set of Farmgard Tandem disks in December 2008.

The couple, who own a 320ha farm with dairy, beef and maize, use the discs to re-grass, and for turnip and maize paddocks.

Previously the Shallues used a reversible plough.

"We decided to purchase [tandem discs] because they are much faster and more economic," Mr Shallue said.

However he admitted they were initially drawn to the tandem discs because of the good salesman.

Prior to the Farmgard equipment they had previously tried two other brands and thought the tandem discs would suit them. They were right.

"It seems to be very robust and big enough for our conditions," Mr Shallue said.

"We would recommend [them] to any other farmer or contractor."

Mr Shallue, who has been in the farming industry for 47 years, said the tandem discs sped up cultivation and saved on fuel.

Tandem discs are available from Farmgard for Tractors from 60 hp up to 300 plus hp. With a width which ranges from 2.75m up to 7.25m.
