NFU Cymru welcomes young entrants support scheme

NFU Cymru has welcomed today’s announcement by the Minister for Rural Affairs, Elin Jones, of a £2m package of measures to support young entrants to the farming industry which will be made available for 2010 - 2011. The Young Entrants Support Scheme (YESS) will open for applications in 2010.

Dai Davies, NFU Cymru President said, "The energy, enthusiasm and dynamism that young people can bring to the farming industry is vital to sustain a vibrant and forward looking industry that will embrace the very many challenges we face.

"NFU Cymru has, in evidence submitted to the Welsh Assembly Government, advocated a number of measures to support young farmers. I am particularly pleased to see that the Minister has decided to make a one off direct aid grant of up to £15,000 for approved capital or revenue projects of £30,000 or more. After successive years of poor profitability many farms are hungry for investment. It can be particularly difficult for young farmers to source capital for development or diversification and this package of measures shows a commitment and confidence to our young entrepreneurs and provides a much needed financial fillip."
