The NFU has praised a move by Marks and Spencer to extend its lamb pledge giving a guaranteed minimum price to more British farmers in the wake of Foot and Mouth and Bluetongue disease.
As part of its Lamb Pledge, the retailer has guaranteed a minimum price of 240p/kg dw to dedicated farmers in its supply chain, with the additional bonus of gaining up to 35p/kg dw for farmers who achieve specific weight and specification, as well as satisfy additional social, environmental and animal welfare benefits.
As part of its increased support M&S has listened to NFU concerns on the availability of British lamb in stores after Christmas and has confirmed sales of British lamb will be extended for two months into the New Year in selected stores. They have also pledged an increase in the number of British lamb products available.
NFU livestock board chairman Thomas Binns said: "We fully endorse the principle of setting a forward minimum price as this helps farms plan their business. Farmers will also be eligible for additional premium through their pick and mix bonus scheme."
"M&S clearly value their relationship with farmers and the important role that they play in the supply of quality British lamb to their customers. Their commitment to use more home-grown lamb in January and February acknowledges that home-grown lamb can deliver the quality that customers demand when a supply chain work together.
"M&S has picked up the challenge that's been set and for that we must congratulate them. This is a good example of responsible retailing and will inject a measure of renewed confidence to farmers at this difficult time, giving them the confidence to plan for the future with secured assurance."
