NFU provides evidence to Efra Committee inquiry into low farmgate prices

The Efra Select Committee will again hear from the NFU as part of its wide-ranging inquiry into the decline of farmgate prices.

NFU head of food and farming Philip Bicknell will today (Wednesday) give evidence to the cross-party panel of MPs alongside the National Pig Association (NPA) and National Sheep Association. In September NFU dairy board vice chairman Michael Oakes and chief dairy adviser Sian Davies appeared before the Committee to talk about the current dairy price situation.

The Efra Select Committee, chaired by Neil Parish MP, launched the inquiry to look at the factors affecting low farmgate prices and measures that could be taken to improve prospects for the farming industry.

Mr Bicknell said the dairy crisis may have drawn the public’s attention towards the plight of farmers – but it’s not just the value of milk which is suffering from volatile world markets.

“Low commodity prices are making it tough for all farmers, regardless of sector. A sustained period of low prices is a real threat, with cash flow and profitability issues impacting the long term viability of some NFU members.

“I’m pleased that the Committee is shining a lot on the wider industry. Whether it’s government, processors or retailers, I think there are steps that all can take to help the agri-food sector through this period and help the supply chain better combat volatility and risk.”
