No clear end to harvest despite welcome dry spell

Farmers are going to be harvesting wheat in October in a number of English regions, but only where fields are dry enough to travel with harvesting machinery. Some harvesting continues in all regions where crops like linseed, beans and spring oilseed rape are still not fully complete across the country. The recent break in the weather meant that good progress was made by many, however the longer nights and high water table in many remaining fields means that finishing the harvest has not been possible for all.

The cereal harvest is largely complete but some areas are still experiencing significant problems with pockets across the country where cereal crops remain in the field. Conditions are still very challenging for some areas and wet conditions continue to hinder the progress of harvest in parts of the North East; including northern parts of Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland and also in areas of the West Midlands including south Worcestershire, Warwickshire and northern Gloucestershire. Where harvest has finished preparation for planting next year’s crop is now being made.
