JUMP IN SUPERMARKET SALES.

Sainsbury’s say that customers from the South of Ireland, have been boosting the sales in there supermarkets in Northern Ireland, because of the cuts in British value added tax and the drop in the value of sterling. Ulster comes under the laws of Great Britain who reduced VAT in an attempt to assist in the credit crisis.

Shoppers are flocking to the border town of Newry in County Down, on the northern side of the border where the Sainsbury store has seen sales jump from 500,000 pounds a week, to a staggering 2.7 million pounds a week.

A spokesman for the supermarket chain, said " This is not a surprise for us. We have seen the trend taking place for some time now. The pound is even weaker and its better value with the recent VAT reduction and it being Xmas so we are seeing even more shoppers from across the border coming to our store in Newry".

The shop is the sixth most profitable store in the world, for the worlds largest retailers Wal-Mart. This is quite a claim for a small market town in Northern Ireland.
