UFU welcomes farm modernisation scheme

The Ulster Farmers’ Union has welcomed confirmation that the Farm Modernisation Scheme is to proceed, following the outcome of discussions between DARD and the EU Commission.

UFU President Graham Furey said; "I am very pleased that any uncertainty around Tranche One of the Farm Modernisation Scheme has been removed. DARD have discussed in detail the scheme with EU officials and have now confirmed that the first round of the scheme will proceed as originally planned.

"It was important to ensure any concerns which the EU Commission had were resolved satisfactorily".

"This was not simply a ’First Come First Served Scheme’ and that has now been explained to the EU Commission. Farmers will be investing in items under the following criteria:

"New technology and innovation; Improved animal health and welfare; Improved hygiene control; Enhanced business efficiency; Increased energy efficiency; and Enhanced environmental status.

"The Farm Modernisation Scheme will be a major economic boost to Northern Ireland’s rural economy and the sooner it is delivered the better".

Graham Furey added; "There was huge demand for this scheme. It is targeted at modernising farm businesses and it will generate much needed economic activity in our rural economy.

"40% support is available to farmers so the £15.25 million available through the scheme will actually generate over £38 million in expenditure in our local rural economy.

"However the first round of the scheme was heavily over-subscribed and looking to future tranches, it is clear that there is a strong case for significantly more funding to be allocated.

"The UFU has already highlighted this to Ministers in the Northern Ireland Executive".
