The natural and organic food will lead the demand of the Peruvian products exported to United States this year, said Peru’s trade adviser in Washington, Ana María Deustua.

"The food sector (fishing and agriculture) will lead exports to US market in 2009, since the economic situation has inhibited the consumption of luxury products, which are an important item of the Peruvian shipments", he said to Andina news agency.

In this sense, she said exports to the US from clothing, craftwork, and jewelry sectors will be the most affected ones. These sectors registered a drop of 20 percent in their demand in the last Christmas campaign.

"Another factor that will boost the Peruvian food sales to the US is that American consumers now prefer products with a quality certification, as the Peruvian ones", she added.

This is due to their bad experience with imported products from other countries which arrived contaminated, she said.

On this regard, Deustua indicated that Peru’s participation at different promotion fairs is very important to continue with the exporting boom that the country has been experiencing for some years
