Peru-The first potato's.

PERU

POTATO’S ARE 8,000 YEARS OLD.

The humble potato comes from Peru and today they still have 500 varieties of potato grown in the country.

The government is now subsidizing farmers to get back into potato production again, as a means to combat the world food shortage.

While the humble spud is 8000 years old, they didn’t reach Europe until the end of the sixteenth century.

Sir Walter Raleigh rook the first potato’s to England in 1585, along with the first tobacco and the first turkeys.

When Sir Walter got home to Devon in England, the story goes he sat in his chair by the fire, when he lit his pipe for the first time, his man servant threw a bucket of water over him, thinking he was on fire.
