Auctioneers Halls reported a pleasing entry for the time of year and an upbeat atmosphere at Bishops Castle store cattle sale on June 23.
Two special entries of cows and calves from Messrs R. Jones, Glenburrel Farm and Messrs W. H. Corfield and Sons, Myndtown Hall Farm met with competitive bidding from the buyers assembled.
Top price of £1,420 went to a super Limousin cross cow with Stabiliser cross calf at foot presented by Messrs W. H. Corfield and Sons. The Corfield family who also recorded £1,260, £1,240 and £1,120 twice for black Limousin cows with Stabiliser cross calves.
Mr Jones from Glenburrel Farm peaked at £1,300 with other Charolais cross cows at £1,140 and £1,000.
Bulls sold to a top price of £920 per head from Mr J. B. Sherry, Fairview for an excellent Charolais cross bull weighing 535 kilos, equating to 172p per kilo. Mr Sherry also had the top priced steer weighing 680 kilos, which sold for £1,100.
Also achieving in excess of £1,000 were a super pair of Charolais cross steers from Messrs D. Edwards and J. H. Cooke, Lodge Farm, which weighed 620 kilos and made £1,020 per head. The same vendors also recorded £960 and £900.
Heifers sold to a top price per head of £952 for 615 kilos from Messrs C. G. and G. M. Jones, Penybryn for a super pair of Belgian Blue cross heifers. Messrs Edwards and Cooke were there again with £935 for a 595 kilo Belgian Blue. The same breed took the next highest at £930 for 620-kilo heifer from Messrs C. G. & G. M. Jones. A good number of heifers made between £800 and £900.
The younger cattle were keenly sought after and prices peaked at 208p per kilo for a pair of Limousin cross steers weighing 350 kilos and presented by Messrs A. G. Williams and Son, Plassau. These were closely followed by Mr Chris Balmer at 200p per /kilo and 192p per kilo, which was matched by Messrs W. L. and K. I. Whtticase, Pentrenant. A good number of steers sold between 170p and 190p per kilo.
Heifers sold to a top price of 195p per kilo from Mr M. P. Jones and Son, Trelerney Farm, who also recorded 185, 183p and 181p per kilo.
"The trade is remaining strong and demand for cattle is good, so farmers are encouraged to get their entries in for the next sale on Thursday, July 28," said David Bryan Jones, of Halls.

Davies and Son, Tynypwll. Limousin: £1,100 for one 680-kilo steer from Mr J. B. Sherry, Fairview and 208p per kilo for two 350-kilo steer from Messrs A. G. Williams and Son, Plassau. Blonde D’Aquitaine: £900 for one 540-kilo steer from Messrs D. Edwards and T H. Cooke, Lodge Farm and 188p per kilo for one 395-kilo steer from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co, Llettygynfach.
Top prices for heifers: Charolais: £900 per head for one 510-kilo heifer from Mr W. F. Prince, Old Hall Farm and 195p per kilo for one 410-kilo heifer from Mr M. P. Jones and Son, Trelerney. Limousin: £800 per head for three 500-kilo heifers from Mr A. Bloor, Whym Farm and 185p per kilo for one 410-kilo heifer from Mr M. P. Jones and Son, Trelerney. Blonde D’Aquitaine: £805 for one 540-kilo heifer from Messrs D. Edwards and T. H. Cooke. British Blue: £952 per head for two 615-kilo heifers from Messrs C. G. and G. M. Jones, Penybryn and 180p per kilo for four 400-kilo heifers from Messrs H. and D. Locke and Statham. Piedmontese: £840 for one 540-kilo heifer from Mr M. P. Jones and Son, Trelerney Farm and 181p per kilo for a 420-kilo heifer from the same vendor.
