Pulse growers get a blueprint for success

Arable farmers can find out how to get free nitrogen fertiliser worth up to £60 per hectare, along with the prospects and advice for growing profitable peas and beans next season, at a series of autumn seminars across the UK. The meetings, titled ’A Blueprint for Pulses’ are being organised by PGRO and Syngenta.

Topics being addressed by PGRO advisors, including Anthony Biddle, Steve Belcher, Jim Scrimshaw and new CEO, Salvador Potter, cover new varieties, research into agronomy to tackle pests, weeds and diseases, along with the economics of free nitrogen and the benefits pulse crops pump into the farming rotation.

"With world commodity wheat markets currently in turmoil, pulse crops look more stable and with good prospects for the UK crop," advises Bruce McKenzie of Syngenta. "Beans and peas look a very attractive option, especially where oilseed rape crops have failed.

"New pulse crop varieties offer higher yields, improved standing ability and enhanced disease resistance. But growers need to be fully aware of the latest information and research to ensure they achieve premium quality and can maximise the value of the crop."
