Record entry for traditional and native breeds auction

A record entry is reported for next month’s show and auction of traditional and native breed sheep, cattle and pigs at Shrewsbury Auction Centre.

Auctioneers Halls have attracted 200 sheep, 40 cattle and 16 pigs from across the country, which is a much larger entry than for the inaugural auction last year.

The auction, to be held on Saturday, July 2, will also incorporate the Shropshire Sheep Breeders Association’s Western Show and Sale.

Matt Williams, who is co-ordinating the auction for Halls, said 160 sheep entries had already been received. They include South Down, Castlemilk Moorit, Jacob, Kerry Hill, Llanwenog, Leicester Longwool, Grey-face Dartmoor, Teeswater, Dorset Down, Manx Loaghtan, Hampshire Down, Cotswolds, Welsh Black Mountain and Badger faced,

Cattle entries include Japanese Black Wagyu, Ruby Red Devon, Gloucester, Dexter, Longhorn and British White.

Consigned to the pigs section are Berkshire, Middlewhite, Large White and Oxford Sandy Black.

Mr Williams said the auction includes both accredited and non-accredited sections. Cup sponsors are being sought for six sections as well as the overall show champion.

In addition to the livestock, there will be a selection of trade stands, including rare breed books, sheep and cattle handling equipment suppliers and feed merchants.
