Research key to Welsh farming
NFU Cymru has joined forces with Cadwyn Cymru / Link Cymru* and University of Wales, Bangor's School for Business and Regional Development (SBARD) to improve efficiency in farms across Wales. Detailed research will be carried out with farmers in Wales in the coming months to determine 'best practice' for agricultural systems in farms. It is believed to be the first research of its kind with Welsh farmers.
Edward Jones a graduate of Prifysgol Cymru Bangor and a farmer's son from Anglesey will carry out the research that has been funded on a two year basis by Knowledge Transfer Partnership supported by DEFRA. The project, sponsored by Lloyds TSB Agriculture, will develop a software package specifically for farmers based on the findings.
The primary data will be provided by information received by farmers via a short questionnaire. Peredur Hughes, NFU Cymru President said: "It is great to be a part of this work especially during this time of change within agriculture. Farming cannot stand still and we need to ensure that our businesses are run as any other porfessional outlet in Wales. Research is key to development and reaching our long term goals as farmers."
Huw Hilditch Roberts, NFU Cymru North Wales Business Development Manager said: "Our staff across Wales are in contact with farmers on a daily basis, and sourcing the information to ensure this research is carried out successfully will inevitably benefit some of those farmers. Improving effective and efficient businesses will ensure a prosperous future for the next generation of Welsh farmers. We are delighted to be a part of this project."
