Rural crime increase warning

A combination of turning the clocks back and the continuing recession could lead to an increase in rural crime, says CLA North.

Douglas Chalmers, Director CLA North, said: "Each year we seem to experience an increase in crime in the countryside almost as soon as the clocks go back. This year, we have the continued spectre of the recession, and we believe this is could simply increase the threat.

"Long dark nights, a lack of police presence in remote areas and often poor security measures provide a field day for criminals, with incidents ranging from fly-tipping on private land to thefts of machinery and vehicles. In some cases violence has been used.

"Our advice is to be prepared and be aware. Let’s not wait for it to happen. Taking simple steps such as locking buildings, installing security lights, not leaving tools lying around or keys in vehicles can make your property less of a target.

"It’s very easy to forget that if we’re working on farms or in a rurally based business, we may be observed over a period of time. If our routines mean that buildings, vehicles or tools are being left unattended, they should be made secure. And it’s sad to have to say so, but not every unexpected or unfamiliar visitor may have honest intentions."

"Have a look around your premises now, and if you feel you would benefit from further help, contact the Crime Prevention Officer at your local police station."
