Russia-The pork industry.

RUSSIA-SELF SUFFICIENT IN PORK.

Russian official has stated that the country would be able to produce as much poultry meat and even may produce as much pork as it needs within approximately four years, according to reports.

Viktor Zubkov, First Deputy Prime Minister has stated at a news conference that Russia would be able to be self sufficient with poultry "within the next two to three years. He also stated that "we also have a chance to fully provide ourselves with pork within three to four years."

However, to uplift domestic beef production would be more difficult. "Beef production is the most difficult part of (Russian) stock raising. For this reason, the state is beginning to invest federal funds in this industry. This work is planned to take several years," stated Zubkov.

"There are no beef breeds of cattle in Russia," added Zubkov. He said that all beef produced in Russia now is either veal or a by-product of dairy farming. According to Zubkov, Russia produced 8% more pork and 18% more poultry last year than in 2007.
