Russia- The worlds largest beef importers.
AUSTRALIA MAKE INROADS TO RUSSIA.
It is no coincidence, that since the Brazilian beef Giant JBS-Swift, took over 20% of the Australian beef industry, the buyers from Russia followed. The Russian market over the last 10 years was one of the main factors in propelling Brazil into the world number one beef exporter.
In the first 11 months of 2008, there was 71,947 tons of Australian cow beef exported to Russia, compared to 3,292 tons in 2007.
While orders have dropped of from Russia in recent weeks, this is not peculiar to Australia, as Russia is not buying currently from South America.
Beef that has been sent to St Petersburg and not paid for since the economic collapse in recent weeks, has been placed into storage Russia or returned to the transit port of Hamburg, this beef is now being sold on the market at unbelievable prices.
This unexpected source of cheap beef, will carry the Russian requirements through until January.
The Russians are not going to buy more than essential beef this side of Xmas, as delivery will not be until January and with the unknown market trend prices could be anywhere.
Australia is now the worlds second largest exporter of beef after Brazil, this year 941,419 tons of beef have been exported in the first 11 months.
The main client is still Japan, who took 332,668 tons of beef.
Indonesia who prefer live cattle, purchased 30,435 tons of beef in the first 11 months.
It is only a matter of time when economics will make boxed beef the order of the day, whilst the luxury of live cattle is all well and good, the Taxi Fare makes it impractical long term.
