The Christmas Dairy Show and Sale at Shrewsbury Auction Centre on December 14, sponsored by Santander Bank and Blue Merle, attracted a first rate entry of cows and heifers which ensured quality from start to finish.

The day’s top cow, Dilandy Best Maxine from Messrs D. and A. C. Shakeshaft of Ellesmere, pipped the best heifer to the overall championship. This second calver was five weeks into her lactation, giving 41kg and was sold at £2,120 to Messrs H. P. Price and Sons of Shrewsbury.

Top heifer was Enchmarsh Leader Iolanthe from Messrs J. Allsop and Sons, Church Stretton. The heifer, sired by Bo Irish Lead Ready out of Westminster dam, sold at £2,300 to Mr Adrian Jones of Garthmyl. Next best heifer, a Cogent Matisse daughter under the Cruckbury prefix from Messrs D. J. D. and J. B. Taylor of Myddle, sold for £2,220.

The excellent entry of heifers averaged £1,792, selling to one of the best trades seen for some time at Shrewsbury. Fourteen-month-old maiden heifers from Messrs P. M. and S. D. Bradbury of Whixall sold to a top of £740.
