Shrewsbury mart reports best dairy trade of 2009
Auctioneers Halls reported their best dairy trade of the year at Shrewsbury Auction Centre last Tuesday.
A good entry of fresh heifers averaged £1,744 to a top price of £2,380 and many exceeded the £2,000 mark.
Top of the pile was a Lucente daughter from Messrs J. H. Sankey and Sons, Preston, Telford that sold to a Hereford buyer.
Next was Hilsummer Clara from Messrs R. Fowler and Sons Ltd of Droitwich that sold at £2,350. This heifer, by Mr Milkmaster, was even more notable as her grand dam had just recently left the farm at the ripe old age of 23 years.
Not to be outdone, both Messrs Cambidge of Weston under Lizard and Mr Rob Evans of Rowton, Telford also realised £2,200 each.
"The shortage of dairy replacements is becoming ever more apparent and is, without doubt, holding up the trade to some degree," said dairy expert David Giles, a director of Halls.
