South Korea-Farmers cannot sell local beef.
SOUTH KOREA.
DROP IN CONSUMPTION OF HOME PRODUCED BEEF.
With the American beef being back on the market of South Korea, which is being sold at large discounts, coupled with the Australian beef exporters, trying to hold their share of the market, followed by the New Zealand beef exporters, promoting their own grass fed beef and Uruguay also selling grass fed beef, the farmers of South Korea have a job selling their few cattle.
The traditional Hawoo cattle and other types of local cattle, are now down in numbers to 2.43 million nationwide, which is a drop of 2.7 % on last year.
The number of small farms breeding cattle is 181,000, which mean each small farm has a average of around 13 head of cattle.
However the numbers of dairy cows has risen by 1.2%, in the same period as farmers moved from beef to dairy. There are close to half a million dairy cows in the country.
Farmers have been reluctant to go into pig farming, because of the price of feed and the low market price globally, there are however 9.1 million pigs in the country.
Poultry has always been a mainstay of small farmers, there are an estimated 60 million hens kept for eggs, along with 55 million chickens kept for poultry meat.
Every cold store of South Korea is bursting at the seams with US beef that is being prostituted on the market, in order to gain market share again, after the 5 years off the market.
