Study shows farming families at breaking point

A study of Wimmera Mallee farming families has found evidence the community is fatigued and fracturing.

Twenty families were interviewed in September last year as part of the Bichip Cropping Group's 'Critical Breaking Point' study.

An interim report shows almost all those interviewed were considering whether they would continue farming, and that many were facing more financial problems than ever before.

The Cropping Group's Alex Gartmann says the findings paint a negative picture, but that the interviews were done as crops withered because of low rainfall.

"From September onwards, things may or may not have changed," she said.
