Thompson’s tip: Review pig unit water systems

A periodic review of the water system is essential on every pig unit. Borehole water should be checked at least annually as problems of salinity are seen in some aquifers, advises Paul Thompson, veterinary consultant to pig-breeding company, ACMC Ltd.

Flow-rates of drinkers should be checked against the recommendations in the codes of welfare. All drinking points should be tested at least daily and before filling a new pen. Cases of salt poisoning are still seen — and this is an avoidable condition!

Periodic flushing of the water system, with a disinfectant recommended for incorporation in the water system, is also advisable.
