Time is running out to enter Welsh Rural Community Champion Award

Time is running out to enter NFU Cymru’s Welsh Rural Community Champion Award, which recognises the vital role farmers play in their local community.

The ‘Welsh Rural Community Champion Award’, now in its seventh year, is sponsored by the Principality Building Society.

Applications are invited from all across Wales, from those farmers who use what little spare time they have away from the farm to help their local community thrive, with the winner receiving £500 and two runners-up getting £100 each.

Sarah Jones, Communications Adviser for NFU Cymru said: “We want to recognise the hard work farmers do off the farm in order to help their local rural community.

“Potential award winners could be involved in all sorts of things which play an important part in making a thriving rural community, for example, organising traditional community events such as local shows to embracing modern technology to promote food, farming and rural life to the wider community.”

The closing date for entries is Monday, 11 April 2016 and the winner will be announced on the Sunday of this year’s Royal Welsh Spring Festival.

Principality’s Group Chief Executive, Graeme Yorston said, “We pride ourselves on supporting the communities in which we operate and our members live and we are delighted to have the opportunity to recognise individuals that share in this passion.

“Farmers play an important role in adding value to the local community and rural life and we believe, along with NFU Cymru, that their contribution should be both celebrated and rewarded.”
