Two million farm animals to be vaccinated

All cattle, sheep and goats in Switzerland, apart from those about to be slaughtered, have started to receive a vaccine against bluetongue disease.

The illness, which is not considered dangerous for humans but can devastate animal herds, spread through Germany and France and first appeared in Switzerland in October.

The obligatory vaccinations will be carried out in June and July, although animals in inaccessible pastures will be treated on their return to lower altitudes.
