UK and Irish survey confirms speed of recovery with Draxxin
Rapid response to treatment was one of the key findings of a survey among the UK and Irish pig industry into use of Draxxin™, the single injection, long-acting antimicrobial licensed to treat mixed respiratory disease in pigs.
The survey involved almost 50 veterinary surgeons and pig producers throughout the UK and Ireland, and investigated current Draxxin use in pigs.
Among the pig producers, 95 per cent felt that Draxxin resulted in faster improvement in health compared to other injectable antibiotics and would like to use it again. 35 per cent found it more convenient and 30 per cent found it easier to use than other injectable antibiotics.
Among veterinary surgeons, 67 per cent reported that the response to treatment was better two days after injection compared with other antibiotics, with 76 per cent reporting a similar improvement after 10 days. These findings may reflect the fact that Draxxin is both fast-acting and long-lasting.
According to Nigel Lodge, MRCVS Technical Manager for the Pfizer Pig Team, "the survey demonstrates to us the benefits that Draxxin offers to the pig industry. The single injection means that pig producers don't need to spend time injecting medicines for a second or third time and that pigs are not subjected unnecessarily to extra stress. Furthermore, full course therapy in a single injection means that compliance is assured."
The popularity of Draxxin stems from its exceptionally long period of activity combined with the convenience of providing a complete treatment from a single injection.
The first of a new macrolide sub-class of antimicrobials called triamilides, Draxxin is indicated for the treatment of swine respiratory disease associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia, Pasteurella multocida and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. The dose is a single intramuscular injection of 1ml / 40 kg bodyweight.
