United Kingdom-Another positive move to promote Veal industry.
ASDA’s DairyLink and BeefLink farmers in the Westcountry will now find it cheaper and easier to rear new-born calves, as a result of a series of discounts negotiated by the supermarket on colostrum and milk powder as well as ear tags. As part of its CalfLink initiative, Asda is offering all of its cattle farmers the chance to buy powdered calf colostrum at £4.50 per sachet. They can also continue to get a ten per cent reduction on milk powder and supplements. The discounts have been negotiated with The Calf Company, a specialist supplier of products and services to calf rearers in the UK.
MORE than 30 farms around the country are taking part in the Soil Association’s Easter Egg Hunt, with organic chocolate egg prizes from Green & Blacks. Once the children have hunted for Easter eggs they can spend the day exploring the farm and sampling local organic produce. The schedule is: April 5, West Town Farm, Ide, near Exeter; 9, Highfield Farm, Topsham; April 11, Riverford Farm, Buckfastleigh; Woodland Valley Farm, Ladock; and Glebe Farm, Langport; 12, Hindon Organic Farm, Minehead; Hunstile Organic Farm, Bridgwater; and Linsombe Farm, Bidwell Barton, Exeter; and April 13, Little Comfort Farm, Braunton.
THE South Devon Herd Book Society is holding its Spring Show and Sale at Exeter Market on March 25. There are 43 pedigree bulls and 21 pedigree females offered, with judging at 9am and the sale at 12.30pm. More details from the auctioneers Kivells on 01566 771900.
BUYERS from all parts of the South West attended the dispersal sale of the milking portion of the Hasselt Herd of Holsteins, held at Heath Hill Farm, Winkleigh for E J & H B Laaveld who are ceasing milk production. Highest price was 2,500gns for the September-calved Hasselt Wallen 3rd, who was sired by the home-bred Hasselt Joe, being purchased by Messrs Hill from Wellington who took five other lots at 1,900gns and over. Second highest price was 2,350gns for the four-year-old second-calver Hasselt Gem, being purchased by Cornish buyer, M Button. In-calf heifers sold to 2,100gns for Hasselt Wallen 40 due in May, also going to Messrs Hill.
