United Kingdom-Bobby calf crisis.
UNITED KINGDOM.
CALF SLAUGHTER.
Since the boycott of English bobby calves by Holland and Belgium, after TB reactors entered Holland, 3,000 dairy bull calves were being shot and dumped each week.
This was during the late autumn calving, the calves were being shot and dumped in order to preserve the cows milk.
The RSPCA, are quite correctly up in arms over the issue. Supermarket chains have offered to promote veal in their stores, which will help the situation.
There used to be 1,000 bobby calves every night, on Smithfield Meat Market in London, slaughtered at 1 to 5 days old.
This trade is still alive and well in Australia. In Victoria Australia, 30,000 bobby calves are killed a week from April until August, processed and exported to the USA, as white baby veal.
The skins are worth $15,the rennet (from the gut)for cheese making $5, the liver $3, which leaves you a 20 kilos carcass, that will yield 14 kilos of prime white veal worth $7.50 kilo.
This give you AU$128 per calf gross.
