United Kingdom-Farmer in Court on TB charges.

Andrew Barker, 47, who runs Midgleton Farm, Bacup Road, Todmorden, admitted 33 offences, including three of defying TB restrictions.

Calderdale Magistrates Court heard Barker – who has been farming for 35 years – was charged with two offences of mADVERTISEMENToving animals on to land and then off again before the required six-day stay time.

He faced three charges of moving animals contrary to TB restrictions, and one of failing to collect and move sheep carcasses.

He faced another charge of failing to store sheep carcasses so that birds and other animals could not get to them, and one offence of failing to collect and move sheep’s wool.

He was charged with four counts of failing to register cattle and 21 offences of failing to complete records properly.

Prosecuting for Calderdale Council, Claire Farrimomd said the rules Barker had breached were important for securing animal welfare and preventing the spread of diseases such as TB, Foot and Mouth and BSE.

Richard Prew, representing Barker, said the defendent has one of the biggest farms in the area, with 2,500 sheep as well as cattle.

None of the animals he moved tested positive for diseases.

He said Barker had seen farming restrictions tighten considerably over the last 35 years while rewards for farmers had diminished.

"That’s not to say Mr Barker has been cutting corners but he does accept that his standards haven’t been as good as they should be," said Mr Prew.

Miss Farrimomd had asked magistrates to impose Barker with a fine of over £9,000 to cover the council’s investigation and legal costs.

He was ordered to pay £5,340, which included £3,000 costs.
