470 WORKERS COULD LOSE MEAT JOBS.
UP to 470 workers face redundancy after a food company announced it will close the abattoir and butchery at its Haverhill pork processing plant.
VION Food Group, which took over the Grampian Country Food Group last June, announced that more than half of its 800 employees at the Little Wratting site could face the axe.
VION said it was restructuring its abattoir and sliced cooked meats operations at its plants in Haverhill and Malton, Yorkshire.
The company is proposing to close its abattoir, butchery, and some elements of its retail operations in Haverhill and transfer these operations to Malton.
At the same time, VION is proposing to transfer all cooked meats operations currently based at its Malton site to Haverhill. The company said this would allow the Haverhill business to focus on the production and processing of cooked meats.
As a consequence of the proposed changes, there is the possibility of redundancies at both plants.
