United Kingdom-New rules for fallen stock start 11 January.

UNITED KINGDOM.

NEW RULES FOR FALLEN STOCK.

Farmers have been informed and reminded that the free collection of casualties and fallen stock ends on January 11.

After this date farmers have to make their own arrangements for the removal of cattle that need to be tested for BSE..

FROM January 11, cattle under the age of 48 months will not need to be BSE tested, however all cattle over the age of 30 months, will have to be sent to an approved meat plant, pending a review by the Food Standards Agency.

There is two million pounds being set aside by the government, for the National Fallen Stock Agency, to assist in the transition period.

All cattle imported or born before 1996, now must be destroyed as a safety measure, these cattle cannot go into the food chain for human consumption
