PEDIGREE SALES – BLONDE EARLY SPRING SHOW & SALE
Blonde cattle was very much in demand at the early spring show and sales for the Blonde Society on Friday at Carlisle.
Trade saw 10 animals reaching up to 3,000gns and over with only two bulls not selling giving an impressive average just short of £3,667.
Topping the sale at 5,500gns was the days Junior and Overall Male Champion shown by father and son team Peter and James Weightman of the Hallfield herd based at Peterlee, Co.Durham. Hallfield Cavalier, a May 2007 born son of the herds stock bull Doncombe Ayres Rock and bred from a Ballygowan Noble sired mother. Cavalier’s maternal brother, Bonzo, sold for 5,000gns at this sale last year. Successful buyers were P & J Johnson of the Yorkshire based Howardian herd which is near Terrington.
The Reserve Junior Male Champion secured the next leading price tag of 4,500gns for Dumfriesshire breeder Ewan Burgess with his 21 month young home bred bull. Criffel Classic is sired by the noted Whitefield Leader and out of Millend Unity’s who carries noted bloodlines as Ganaway and Stocksfield in her pedigree. Classic now travels into the Welsh countryside to Powys for enthusiast CI Thomas of Montgomery.
The Hallfield prefix clinched the next sale price of 4,100gns for Messrs Weightman. Hallfield Carlos, an April 2007 son of Ayres Rock, is bred from Hallfield Vivacious a daughter to the renowned Megray Serendipity. He was knocked down to JE & AJ Mitchell of Marwood, Barnard Castle.
Reaching up to the 4,000gn mark was Doncombe Chernabog consigned by Bristol breeders David and Sue Knight. This 2 year old son of Druk Thor and out of a Druk Lance sired daughter, Chernabog lifted the Senior Male Championship along with the Reserve Overall Male Championship earlier in the day. He was sold to Edwards Partners of Presteigne, Powys.
In the female section the leading price of 3,500gns went to the youngest heifer in the sale, Hilltop Dolly, shown by local breeder and judge for the event Andrew Stott of Carlisle. Dolly is a daughter of the 2008 Royal Highland Show Supreme Champion Shapfell Bongo and bred out of a Hadley Esquire sired dam. Dolly joins the Everingham Herd belonging to Neil Barrett of Yorkshire.
Selling for 2,500gns was the Reserve Blonde Babe Champion, Cosdon Dakota a sweet heifer consigned by Pete Holman and Pauline Williams of Devon. Dakota, a 13 month old Hillhead Umar bred daughter carries the noted Blackwater Jockey bloodline through her dams pedigree, was knocked down to MP Capstick of Kirkby Stephen.
The days Blonde Babe Champion was an incalf heifer Hillhead Cilla from the noted Hillhead Blonde herd of Co.Down, N.Ireland. Cilla’s pedigree includes no less than four RUAS Champions, one RASE Champion and one RUAS and RASE Interbreed Champions. She sold in calf to the renowned Whistley Dollar sire and went for 2,200gns to JC & E Pedley of Sedbergh.
AVERAGES – 13 bulls £3666.92 , 1 cow in calf £1680.00, 1 served heifer £2310.00, 10 maiden heifers £1716.75.

Trade was easier on the week as expected given trading reports and deadweight outlets quoting reduced prices. Poorer sorts taking the biggest knock but overall still a decent do.
The feature of the sale today was the Show and Sale of Cattle sired by a Charolais Bull, on behalf of the Border Charolais Club, which was kindly sponsored by Montgomerie Farm Feeds, Silloth. The judge awarded the Championship to Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Calthwaite with a 685 kgs Heifer which sold to the Judge at 208.5p per kg (£1428.23). Reserve honours also went to the same home with the second prize Heifer which sold for 197.50p per kg. Steers sold to 190p from I Grainger, Kiln Close, Glasson. Bulls sold to 179.50p from DA Harrison, The Old Vicarage, Westnewton.

Prime Heifer: 1, and Champion M/s Hewetson, Scales Hall, Calthwaite which sold for 208.5p pr kg; 2, and Reserve Champion – M/s Hewetson, Scales Hall which sold for 197.5p.
Prime Steer: 1, Mr I Grainger, Kiln Close, Glasson which sold for 190.00p pr kg; 2, Mr I Grainger, Kiln Close, Glasson which sold for 181.5p pr kg.
The top price of the day was 208.5p per kg paid for a Charolais Heifer shown by Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Calthwaite which also made top price of £1428.23 per head.
Steers made top price of 190p pr kg for a Charolais shown by Mr I Grainger, Kiln Close, Glasson. The top price per head for Steers was £1335.90 which was paid for a Limousin Bullock shown by GN & DM Bowe, Bothel Parks, Bothel.
Bulls made 179.5p pr kg paid to for a Charolais Bull shown by DA Harrison, The Old Vicarage, Westnewton. Also another Charolais Bull shown by DA Harrison, The Old Vicarage, Westnewton made top price of £1189.89.
Hoggs: After last week a slight reduction by 2p and just a bit of resistance within the ring. However plenty of hoggs £2 per kg plus. Overall trade not too bad with a reduction in quality and more heavier hoggs forward. The top price per head of £108 was paid to GH & JE Steel, The Laurels, Dundraw, Wigton for Texel hoggs and were purchased by GH & JE Steel, The Laurels, Dundraw. Top price of 226.5p pr kg was paid for Beltex hoggs shown by Messrs Jefferson, Abbey Cowper, Abbeytown.
