United Kingdom-Sunday Times Business Person of 2008-awarded to CEO of Morrison's supermarket chain.
UNITED KINGDOM.
SUNDAY TIMES BUSINESS PERSON OF YEARS CREDITS FARMERS.
The winner of the prestigious award Sunday Time Business Person of the Year, has gone to the food industry in the form of Marc Bolland, the CEO of the Morrison’s supermarket chain, who have claimed 700,000 new customers in 2008 despite the economic downturn.
Bolland claims, that his success in no small part was due to the range of daily fresh vegetables, meat and fish displayed in his stores supplied by British farmers, and the smell of freshly baked bread, made with British Wheat, that can be smelt in every store.
The company introduced a policy of buying local from producers in the proximity of their stores, and buying British in regard to the purchase of fresh beef, lamb and pork, giving the supermarkets the air of a market place as opposed to supermarket in their food displays.
The acquisition of the Safeway chain of supermarkets, has seen Morrison become the fourth largest supermarket chain in Great Britain, serving 10 million customers per week, which is an increase of 8% on 2007.
Sir Ken Morrison, the founder of the Supermarket chain, who expanded on his fathers market stall started in the Yorkshire city of Bradford, at the turn of the century, is also a former winner of Britain’s most prestigious business award.
