United Kingdom-Tesco now in USA one year.

UNITED STATES.

TESCO EXPANSION.

When United Kingdom supermarket chain moved into the United States last year, building a supermarket chain known as Fresh and Easy. This move gave Tesco exposure in a dozen countries world wide.

The expansion plans that were forecast have not reached fruition and the company is going to restrict its operations to the west coast for the time being, according to reports in the US business press.

Tesco had very humble beginning’s prior to becoming the largest supermarket chain in Britain, accounting for 40% of all food that is retailed.

The founder Rex Cohen, was a East End of London barrow boy, who after his amazing success and Knighthood, allegedly would dress in disguise one day a week, return to his barrow in Cheap-side from whence he came, where he felt at home with his customers. There is no doubt that Sir Rex knew exactly what his customers wanted.

To compete with the large multiple retail butchers such as Eastmans and Dewhursts with 2,000 butchers shops, Baxters with 350 butchers shops and West Leyton and Mathews with 400 butchers shops, Tesco just bought top bits of beef ( topside, silverside and thick flank) and forequarters ( Fore-rib, chuck, blade, clod, brisket and stewing beef for mince), leaving the expensive steaks in the rump and loin, for their competitors to purvey.

There are no large retailers of meat today, the trade is completely controlled by the supermarkets and the recent emergence of the farm shops. As time went buy Tesco had to improve the selection of meat cuts to cater for the more affluent shoppers, while Sainsbury had to cater for the less discerning, client to improve their market share.

Note. Jeffrey Archer- based his best selling novel "As the Crow Flies" on the Rex Cohen rise and rise to fame.
