United States-Meat inspection not working at USDA.
UNITED STATES-USDA AND MEAT INSPECTION JUST NOT FUNCTIONING LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD.
Iowa Senator Tom Harkin says FDA oversight of state inspection of food processing facilities does not work. Harkin wrote a letter to Dr. Stephen Sundlof, Director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, stating that fact. This comes after another Peanut Corporation of American plant was closed after Salmonella was detected at the facility. FDA officials confirm that the plant in Texas may have gone four years without a food safety inspection.
So far, hundreds of people have been sickened and lives have been lost. Harkin said, – we’ve been here before and we cannot afford to be here again. He added, - we are seeing the results of food processing facilities that go uninspected.
Meanwhile, Harkin is asking FDA to release to Congress records detailing the inspection report from the Georgia state Department of Agriculture. The FDA has yet to submit the documents. Harkin - urge FDA to release the records on state contracts immediately.
