Farmers are concerned about how to bury their livestock now that a new federal regulation requires the removal of the brain and spinal column before processing cattle 30 months of age or older.

It’s making it more expensive to handle dead livestock and helped push out of business the last Missouri company willing to travel from farm to farm to pick up dead animals.

Farmers aren’t sure exactly how they will dispose of their dead livestock. Many are concerned that the animals could be left for scavengers or dragged into creeks. Others fear that even properly buried cattle could eventually contaminate groundwater or wells.
