United States-Organic award to farmers.

UNITED STATES-

An Iowa couple has been awarded the MOSES Organic Farmer of the Year award at the Midwest organic conference in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Tom and Irene Frantzen have a diversified farm that includes a farrow-to-finish hog operation in New Hampton, Iowa. MOSES says Tom Frantzen is an "innovator" who has "pioneered successful grazing strategies and practices pasture farrowing." The family began a certified organic feed business in 2001 which today supplies organic feed to organic hog, poultry and dairy farms in the Midwest.

All the Frantzen’s slaughter animals are certified organic and marketed through Organic Prairie Meat Company. The Frantzens helped form the Organic Pork Pool at Organic Prairie and have started a program that turns butter and buttermilk waste products from the Organic Valley co-op into organic hog feed.
