UNITED STATES-CONCERNS OVER FOOD SAFETY.
-A bipartisan group of powerful U.S. senators Tuesday
introduced a bill that would greatly expand the government’s powers to police
the nation’s food supply. The proposed legislation, which comes in the wake of
a batch of food-borne outbreaks, would expand the Food and Drug
Administration’s access to company records during a food emergency and give the
agency mandatory-recall powers. The bill would also require a boost in FDA
inspections of food facilities, and require importers to verify the safety of
their products.
