University of Lincoln students visit EPIC Centre for global warming exhibition project‏

Students from the University of Lincoln are turning their attentions to global warming by designing exhibitions about the topic for Lincolnshire's newest eco-friendly centre.

The students will make their first visit to the site of the £7 million EPIC Centre, which is being constructed at the Lincolnshire Showground, on Thursday (29th November).

The second-year undergraduates must design multi-zone exhibitions examining global climate change, the effects of climate change locally in Lincolnshire and what individuals, businesses and communities can do about it.

"Part of the EPIC project is to get students involved in the global climate change agenda and for the centre to work with local education providers, including schools and the universities," said Dr Nick Cheffins, Project Director of the EPIC Centre.

Dr Geoff Matthews, senior lecturer in Architecture at the University of Lincoln, said the project fitted in perfectly with course requirements and the needs of the centre.

"Our course is designed for exhibitions and museums, so we're interested in every environment that has to communicate something effectively," he said.

"One thing the EPIC project needs is an introductory exhibit that puts across the key messages about global warming and the role of local people and businesses. It needs to communicate something specific, which happens to fit in well will one of our course units."

The project focuses on the concept stage of exhibition design and will be completed over three weeks. Students will present their work in December, when they will receive feedback from university staff and EPIC Centre representatives.

The EPIC Centre, which will be a showcase for new environmental technologies, is due to be complete in May 2008. It will contain exhibition halls, conference facilities, offices and function rooms and is also a convention and event centre.
