Urgent meeting to discuss cattle sale date clash

An urgent meeting will be held tonight to decide whether Mudgee, in central western New South Wales, should change the day of its weekly cattle sale.

The operators of the new regional livestock centre at Carcoar have decided to have cattle sales on the same day as Mudgee.

A spokesman for the Mudgee branch of the NSW Farmers Association, Ross Mayberry, says Mudgee could move its sale day to Wednesday.

However, he says that would be the death knell for the Binnaway, Dundedoo and Coolah saleyards.

"Well, it means the buyer has to make a decision as to which sale he comes too. There's not a great deal of buyers in the market, so naturally enough you want to attract as many buyers as you can to make the price a lot more equitable," he said.

"So it would put them in conflict as to whether they follow their traditional way or whether they come to Mudgee, which probably would have as big, or bigger sales."
