Uruguay-Cow numbers down.

URUGUAY.

COW NUMBERS DOWN 10%.

The Argentine beef shortages owing to the farmers dispute, along with the problems in Brazil, being restricted from Europe in part, have been a boom for Uruguay.

The cattle slaughtering was at record numbers, as well as beef exports to Russian (all cow beef) and the European Union.

Summer is now normally a time for plenty of grass in Uruguay,Cattle numbers are nornally at their highest. According to the Department of Agriculture, the national beef herd is 10% short on cows and heifers, compared to the figures for last year.

Farmers have been taking advantage of the good prices and demand for cattle, selling their stock for slaughter.

There is going to be a 10% drop in calf numbers this autumn.

The short term effect is negligible, however by July the numbers are going to well be down on previous years.
