The problems with animal rights organizations in Australia, concerning the mulesing of sheep, has opened a door in Uruguay for organic wool. There is a strong demand for organic wool and customers are willing to pay a bonus, which looks promising for the Uruguay sheep industry.

The production of organic wool, would compliment the world demand for organic lamb.The wool clip for this season in Uruguay is expected to be 42 million kilos.

The current sheep flock is now only 10 million, as more farmers have moved into arable farming, taking advantage of the high commodity prices.

There are 60,000 jobs, involved in the sheep industry and the wool industry is worth US$360 million.

The national sheep flock was 26 million, 10 years ago, however the profit margins were eaten up by brokers in the wool and lamb industry.
